Libreoffice 5.4.2
www.libreoffice.org What you need: Windows 7, 8/8.1 or 10
The latest Libreoffice update focuses on bug fixes – so why are we talking about it? Partly because this program is the best free Microsoft Office alternative by far and we can’t get enough of it, but also because it gives gives us a reason to round up all the new features added since it was last in Best Free Software, back in Issue 496. Additions include support for watermarking your documents (see screenshot), the option to remember export settings in spreadsheets, and a 64bit version. Libreoffice also now preserves numbered and bulleted lists when you’re pasting them in plain text. Version 5.4.2 stabilises these features, with almost 100 bug fixes.
Libreoffice is big (547MB for the 64bit version) but it’s quick to install, and there’s no junk to dodge. If you’d rather avoid installation, you can download a portable version of Libreoffice 5.4.1 ( www.snipca.com/25891).
