Is Systemcare safe to install? Q

I followed Issue 515’s Workshop (page 35) for installing Iobit Advanced Systemcare (ASC). However, when I tried to install the downloaded file Malwarebytes flagged up some issues with this software. Is this an incorrect action by Malwarebytes? If so, is it safe to exclude ASC from Malwarebytes’ scans? Martin Perry

A

yes, this is a false positive. Malwarebytes routinely classifies ASC as a potentially unwanted program ( PUP). We don’t consider ASC a PUP, so you’re safe to go ahead and install it. It sounds like you know how to do this but for the benefit of other readers, after Malwarebytes flags up ASC, clear the tick from alongside its entries (see screenshot above right), click Next, then click Ignore Always.

Why does the Kindle app crash? Q

I downloaded the Kindle app to my Acer tablet while following your Workshop in Issue 515 (page 42). However, when I try to run it I see a message saying ‘Unfortunately Amazon Kindle has stopped’. Any ideas? David Beynon

A

first, try switching off your tablet and then restarting it — that might be all it takes to fix it. Just hold down the power button for a few seconds then tap ‘Power off’, and then hold it down again to restart. If the Kindle app still crashes, on your tablet’s home screen tap Settings followed by Apps, then Amazon Kindle. Now tap Storage and, in turn, tap Clear Data (followed by OK) and then Clear Cache (see screenshot below left).

If you still have no joy, return to Settings and tap About (or ‘About tablet’) followed by ‘System update’, then Check For Update. Download any available update, then try the Kindle app again.

Why has my favourite shortcut stopped working? Q

I’ve

been a Computeractive subscriber for more years than I can remember and avidly follow your tips. In Issue 514 (page 51) I saw probably the best tip ever, from reader Edmund Chavasse about the ability to change the active window using the Windows key+arrow keys. I loved being able to do this, but the left and right functions suddenly stopped working, even though the up and down ones still work fine. Do you have any ideas? My PC runs Windows 10. Alan Blackbourn

A

there are a couple of possible causes. The feature’s name is Snap, and you should first check that you haven’t inadvertently disabled it. Click Start, the settings cog, then System followed by ‘Multi-tasking’. Under the Snap heading, make sure the first slider is On — that’s the one labelled ‘Arrange windows automatically by dragging them to the sides or corners of the screen’ (see screenshot below left). If that switch is already On then open Control Panel (click Start, type control panel, then click Control Panel). Next, click ‘Ease of Access’, ‘Ease of Access Centre’, then ‘Make the keyboard easier to use’. Scroll down to the ‘Make it easier to manage windows’ heading. If the box below this is ticked, clear it and then click OK.

Can I change the Mail app’s default font? Q

IN Issue 511 (page 57) you explained how to create new folders in the Windows 10 Mail app. That worked fine, but what I’d like to know now is how to change the font and its size permanently. I change these for individual emails but the app always reverts back to Calibri, font size 11. This is very frustrating and time consuming! Steve Leedham

A

WE feel your pain but unfortunately this problem has always afflicted the Mail app, and the only solution is for Microsoft to give itself a good kick up the backside and release an update that enables its long-suffering users to change the default typeface. In the meantime, if your main problem is that you find the text too small, try using Windows 10’s scaling option, because this will increase the font size throughout Windows (and therefore also in Mail). Click Start followed by the settings cog, and then System followed by Display. Scroll down to ‘Scale and layout’ and choose a larger percentage, or click ‘Custom scaling’ to type your own value.
