Can I disable my scroll-wheel button?

-

QAs I’ve gotten older my fingers have become less nimble, so I find it harder to use the mouse. In particular, the scroll wheel on my mouse is rather stiff, so needs a lot of pressure to turn it. I find myself pressing too hard and clicking the button that this wheel also has. That activates an annoying scroll mode that I never use. So, I’d like to disable my scrollwheel button. Could you tell me how to do this, please? Eric Harman

AIt depends on your mouse or, more accurately, its

driver. You didn’t tell us the make and model, but in most cases changing the setting is easy. In the first instance, click Start followed by the Settings cog, and then Devices followed by Mouse. Next, click ‘Additional mouse options’ (see screenshot). This opens the Mouse Properties box.

Now click the tab relating to your mouse. For a Microsoft mouse, for instance, click the ‘Mouse and Keyboard Center’ tab followed by ‘Click here to change Microsoft mouse settings’. Next, click ‘basic settings’ followed by ‘Wheel button’, then choose ‘Disable this button’. Click the Back button (the left arrow), and you’re done.

If you don’t see a mouse-specific tab in the Mouse Properties box, then head to the mouse manufacturer’s website to download and install the latest driver. The ‘Mouse and Keyboard Center’, for example, is a free download from www.snipca.com/26502.
