Make WINDOWS Run Like NEW! How, When & Why you should...

Reset Refresh Restore Reinstall...

-

Asmooth-running Windows installation just makes everything better. Your computer starts in a flash, programs load quickly and crashes are few and far between. If this sounds more dreamland than reality, it’s time to do something about it. The good news is that you don’t need any advanced technical expertise, and while some options demand a bit of your time, there are things you can do in just a few minutes to revitalise a tired-out Windows.

In some cases, only a complete reinstallation of Windows will get it running like new. But Microsoft has a few useful tricks, including the ability to get the best of both worlds: a fresh Windows install, but with your user settings and personal files left intact.

In this feature, we’ll look at the four main weapons in your arsenal to get Windows running fast and more reliably: refresh, restore, reset and reinstall. Depending where you look online, you’ll find different definitions for these terms. Microsoft, for example, has enjoyed switching the terms around over the past few versions of Windows. So to avoid any confusion, here’s our take on the four Rs: REFRESH Achieve a performance boost by uninstalling unwanted programs and changing Windows settings. RESTORE Revert Windows to a previous point in time using System Restore. RESET Return Windows to its default settings, leaving your personal files intact. REINSTALL A complete fresh start, including reinstalling Windows and (optionally) formatting your hard drive.

Which R is right for you depends on what you’re looking to achieve and the time you’re willing to spend doing it. As always, we’d recommend backing up your personal files before diving into action.
