Why is itunes showing this error?

-

QWhenever my wife or I close itunes on our Windows 10 Pro computer we receive a message that one or more applications are using itunes scripting. We’re asked if we’re sure we wish to quit and, once Quit is clicked, itunes closes without bother. I’ve looked in Task Manager to see what processes are in use under itunes but I didn’t see anything useful; and I’ve checked Task Manager more widely for clues, but found none.

My wife did have Last.fm installed on the computer, which I thought may be causing the message, but removing it did not rectify the issue. Other than this, itunes works OK, but do you have any suggestions as to what might be going on – or how to stop this message every time we exit the program? Paul Croft

AThis is happening because a program or device is accessing your itunes library. However, when you exit itunes the link between itunes and the mystery connection is severed, which is why itunes warns you that something is making use of its scripting service.

We can’t tell you which program or device is doing this, but Last.fm might be one. However, you say you’ve uninstalled it so, unless the uninstallation didn’t go to plan, that seems unlikely to be the cause. So, think about any other audiorelated tools you have installed. Also think about Bluetooth devices that are connected to your PC, as these can make use of itunes scripting too.

It’s not usually anything to worry about. All that’ll happen is that the affected program or device will be unable to make use of your itunes-library info until you fire up itunes again – so it should soon be obvious what’s lacking a connection.

As well, or alternatively, you could enable a ‘legacy’ method of itunes-library sharing: this might allow the affected program or device to continue operations after you’ve exited itunes, and thus stop the warning message.

In itunes, open the Edit menu and click Preferences. Next, click the Advanced tab and then tick the box labelled ‘Share itunes Library XML with other applications’ (see screenshot) and click OK.
