Can I fix my laptop myself?

-

QMy Windows 10 laptop recently began displaying an 0xc0000005 error code, which I could not clear because everything would freeze and then the computer would automatically shut down after a countdown. I took my machine to a local shop to have it repaired, at a cost of £69. Obviously, I’m keen to not have to pay more if it goes wrong again, so I’m wondering if you can tell me what causes this message and how to clear it should I encounter it in the future?

AWe’re surprised that the folks in the shop didn’t proffer any insight into their findings. That particular error can be caused by a number of things, from corrupt registry entries to a malware infection, meaning it could require several different fixes. So, in the first instance we’d suggest returning to the shop to ask for more details.

However, one common cause of this and other freeze-related errors is faulty or dislodged memory. The latter can be a particular problem with laptops as they tend to be moved around a lot. Every little bump or knock is an opportunity for the RAM modules to work loose.

If you’re unfortunate enough to experience these symptoms again then, in the first instance, disconnect the mains power and touch an earthed metal object to discharge any static electricity. Next, flip the laptop over, remove the panel covering the memory modules and then, with firm thumb pressure, just make sure they’re pushed fully home.
