Where’s my Android ringtone option?

QItried to follow Peter Warbuton’s tip to set a custom ringtone on my Android phone (page 43, Issue 529). This would be useful because the only people from whom I really ever accept calls are my wife and my two grown-up children, so it’d be good to distinguish their calls from others. However, I couldn’t see any option to tap Contacts at the bottom of my screen. Any ideas? My phone is an Asus, not a Google Pixel.

Awelcome

to the wonderful world of Android, where manufacturers are free to shift options around or otherwise alter the ‘standard’ Android interface enough to make providing universal instructions all but impossible. So, while Peter’s instructions are fine for his Pixel XL phone, the method for your Asus model will be slightly different. In fact, Peter’s previous Samsung phone used a different method that didn’t work with his Pixel XL.

We cannot be sure of the screen layout of your Phone app, so your best bet is to make tweaks in your Contacts app. Launch the app, tap a contact, then look for the three dots at the top right. From there, Peter’s instructions should be more or less accurate – but don’t be surprised if the ‘Set ringtone’ menu option has a different label to the one in our screenshot below left.

How do I access Powershell?

QItried to follow the tip on page 46 of Issue 529 to create a Notepad text file listing folder items. However, I stumbled at the instruction to right-click a folder before choosing the ‘Open Powershell window here’ option. Basically, I don’t see that option. I’m using Windows 10 and, so far as I know, it’s up to date. The method for Windows 7/8.1 didn’t work for me either. What am I doing wrong?

Henry Mcintosh

AWEsuspect that you missed out or misunderstood the first part of our instructions. We said “Press the Shift button, right-click your chosen folder…” but, to be totally accurate, we should have said “Press and hold down the Shift button, then right-click your chosen folder…”. When you do this the ‘Open Powershell window here’ command will appear in the context menu (see screenshot above). If you just press and then release Shift, your right-click menu will lack the Powershell option. Another way to open a Powershell window is to press the Windows key+x and then choose it from the Quick Link menu that appears.

How do I enable Chrome’s Reader mode?

QIenjoyed reading Issue 528’s Cover Feature ‘The Internet’s Missing Manual’. However, the command in the ‘Hack Chrome to enable its hidden Reader mode’ box (page 55) doesn’t work. I then went to Google to search for the command, but it said: “Your search - -enable-dom-distiller - did not match any documents”. Does this command even exist?

Mac Robinson

Ayes,

the command exists. However, the results of your Google search suggests you may have mistyped when adding it to the end of the Target command (in the Properties box of your Chrome shortcut – see screenshot below).

It’s very difficult to see in print but the first part of the command requires two hyphens, not one. Your Google result shows that you were searching for the command with just one leading hyphen, so we’re guessing that’s what you added to the target box.

Hopefully, that should resolve your problem but, if you’re still struggling, you can copy and paste the whole string from our Pastebin account ( www.snipca. com/28145).
