Loads more you need

From media players to office tools, everyone has their favourite free software. The type of software that does everything it’s supposed to – and does it really well. While you might be tempted to try an entirely new program that makes all kinds of promises to do even more than your trusty old software, chances are you can simply make your current tools better by installing add-ons, plug-ins and extensions (these terms are often used interchangeably, so we’ll just call them all add-ons). And while some add-ons may just give an interface a new lick of paint, others will add exciting new tools and features.

Open-source programs typically offer more add-ons. Their code is available to all, and there’s often an army of amateur enthusiasts eager to improve them.

Big-name software can also be improved with an add-on or two. Tech giants such as Microsoft know that their users want to do more with their software, so they encourage developers to create add-ons. However, unlike open-source add-ons, many of the extras for commercial software cost money.

Free software is all well and good, but many open-source add-ons can be fiddly to install. So we’ll shed light on how to get these extras into the relevant program. And don’t be put off if an add-on hasn’t been updated for a few years – many of these work perfectly well on the latest version of the software.
