How do I restore my photos and music?

-

QI have an old external hard drive that contains backups of my photos and music, created using Acronis Backup & Recovery 2011. I had a new hard drive professionally fitted to my PC, and all my programs and data were deleted in the process. So, I would like to restore from my backup. I'm reluctant to use Acronis, because I believe this old version has security problems? Also, when I connect the external drive, it now appears as Drive F instead of E (as it used to). I heard somewhere this can cause problems, so how do I switch it back to E? Rob Young

AYes, you’ll need to restore using Acronis software. An element of your old version of Backup & Recovery is in theory vulnerable to the Heartbleed security flaw ( www.heart bleed.com). You could buy a more recent version but, as long as your PC has good security software, we wouldn’t worry about it too much for a one-off restore. Just restore and then uninstall Backup & Recovery afterwards.

Alternatively, if you registered your Acronis product, you can log in and download the company’s free Universal Restore tool from www.snipca. com/28582. This will do the same job, with no security risk.

It’s possible that altered drive letters could cause problems for some programs. To fix this, press Windows key+x, then click Disk Management. In the Disk Management window that opens, right-click the relevant drive then choose ‘Change Drive Letter and Paths’ (see screenshot above left). Now select ‘Assign the following drive letter’, choose the desired letter from the dropdown menu (see screenshot above), then click OK.
