Make Ccleaner do more

Ccleaner has been accused of being reckless with users’ data (see News, Issue 534, page 8 and a more in-depth analysis next issue). However, it remains a popular and effective clean-up tool for Windows, so it would be remiss of us not to include the excellent add-on Ccenhancer (not run by Ccleaner). It removes junk from programs Ccleaner doesn’t support by default, such as Skype, Office and Paint.net.

To use Ccenhancer, download and run the installer from www.snipca.com/ 28830, then click Download Latest (see screenshot). Next, run Ccleaner, go to the Cleaner section, then click Applications.

You’ll now see a range of new programcleaning options. It’s worth periodically running Ccenhancer to download the latest updates - the last version (v4.5.2) was released in March this year.

Give your Virtualbox machines a boost

With Virtualbox ( www. virtualbox.org), you can install virtual PCS that let you run separate operating systems within Windows. It’s loaded with features, but to get the most out of it you need to install the Guest Additions add-on. This adds extra tools, including the ability to transfer files to and from your virtual PCS.

First, run Virtualbox, then boot the virtual PC on which you want to install Guest Additions (if you have more than one virtual PC, you need to install it on both). When your virtual PC has loaded, click the Devices menu, then ‘Insert Guest Additions CD image…’. Now, in your virtual PC, open the File Explorer window, navigate to the CD/DVD drive, double-click the ‘Vboxwindowsadditions’ file, then follow the onscreen installation instructions.

You can access the new features by clicking Devices and exploring the ‘Shared Folders’, ‘Shared Clipboard’ and ‘Drag and Drop’ sections.
