How do I fix my Datally mistake?

QI think I made a mistake when setting up the Datally app on my Android phone, as recommended in your Workshop section in Issue 533 (page 38). A pop-up appeared asking for access to something on my phone. As I’m naturally suspicious, by habit I clicked No – but that means Datally won’t now work. It says it needs usage-access permissions, but I have no idea where to enable these. William Sturgeon

AWhen you launch Datally you should see a button labelled Open Usage Access, below the message telling you that usage-access permissions need enabling. However, on smaller screens, this button can be pushed off the bottom – so we’re guessing you’re just not seeing it.

Instead, from your Android phone’s home screen, tap to launch Settings followed by Security. Now swipe up, then navigate to the very bottom of the Settings page, where you’ll find a section called Advanced. Here, tap ‘Apps with usage access’ (see screenshot below). Finally, tap Datally then flip its ‘Permit usage access’ switch to the On position.

Why do my voicemail recordings drop out?

QI followed your advice in Issue 533’s Cover Feature (see page 52) to copy voicemails from my iphone 6 to my PC, buying one of the cables you recommended. Setup seemed to go fine, as did recording – or so I thought. However, while some sound waves appeared in Audacity the actual recording when played back was very choppy with the voice on the messages dropping in and out and crackling, even though the original messages were all pretty good quality. Do you have any idea what might be wrong? Jack Harris

AThis sounds most likely to be down to a bad connection. We know your cable is brand new, so we can rule that out. However, the 3.5mm jack socket on either your iphone or your PC could be the cause. Smartphones in particular are prone to having dust and gunge enter their various sockets, which is one reason why Apple and other companies are so keen to move us all on to wireless headphones and chargers – so they can get rid of these troublesome connector holes.

So, we’d recommend giving your iphone’s headphone socket a clean. A can of compressed air is a good way to do this and these are cheaply available ( www. snipca.com/28853). Give your iphone’s headphone socket a good squirt or two to dislodge any detritus, and treat your PC’S 3.5mm jack to the same process.

Now try the recording process again. If the problem persists then you might have a faulty jack at either end. You can test the iphone’s socket by simply listening to playback via any pair of headphones, while the PC end could be tested by using any other playback device or microphone.

What’s wrong with my hyperlinks?

QI read your answer to Gordon Hector’s question about hyperlinks (Problems Solved, Issue 532, page 66). I hoped it would resolve my issue with hyperlinks but unfortunately not. I maintain a Word document with info about my ancestors, adding a hyperlink alongside each entry to point to the relevant folder in the My Pictures folder. This worked for years but recently stopped, with Word telling me it “Cannot open the specified file”.

Thinking Office 2010 might be the cause I upgraded to 2013, but the problem remained. I tried to create a new document, but this resulted in the same error message. I suspect this has arisen due to Windows 10 updates but I am unsure as to which one. Barry Akers

AYour problem is similar to Mr Hector’s, in that it’s probably caused by a corrupted or missing registry entry, but it’s not the same one – so the solution is slightly different.

Microsoft has created an automated fix, so you don’t need to delve into the registry. Instead, visit the Microsoft support page at www.snipca.com/28852. Scroll down to the Workaround section and, below the ‘Here’s an easy fix’ heading, click the Download button. Now double-click the downloaded fix tool, tick the ‘I agree’ box to accept Microsoft’s licence then just click Next (see screenshot above). Now restart your PC.
