How do I rotate video on my camera?

-

QI’ve only just read Terry Sutton’s question about using an ipad to rotate video, back in Issue 530. I have the same problem but no ipad! I show a video of my granddaughter’s nativity play holding my Nikon camera in portrait instead of landscape. The Acer video software provided with my Windows 10 PC won't allow me to save a corrected copy of my video. James Thompson

AThe popular VLC media player will do the job. It’s a free download from www.videolan. org, so go grab it now. Once installed, fire it up then drag and drop your video file into the VLC window. Next, open the Tools menu and choose ‘Effects and Filters’. Then, in the ‘Adjustments and Effects’ box that appears, click to select the Video Effects tab and then the Geometry tab. Now tick the Transform box, then open the dropdown menu below, choose the required correction then click Close.

Next, you need to tell VLC to make this change permanent, by saving it as a new video. Open the Media menu and choose ‘Convert / Save’. Next, in the File Selection area, click Add, then choose your video and click ‘Convert / Save’.

In the Convert box that appears, click the little spanner icon in Settings, open the ‘Profile edition’ box and, there, select the ‘Video codec’ tab, followed by the Filters tab. Tick the ‘Video transformation filter’ box, then click Save. Finally, back in the Convert box, type a name for the new video into the ‘Destination file’ box, then click Start.
