Why am I getting signed out?

-

QOccasionally, when using my Windows 10 computer a message appears that warns that I’ll be signed off in two minutes, which indeed then happens. What’s causing this and how can it be prevented? Jim Catterall

ASome programs have options that tell the computer to shut down after they’ve completed a particular task. Is it possible that in the past you ticked such a box? Video-editing software would be a prime suspect, because the process of rendering footage can take a long while.

If that doesn’t ring any bells then you’ll need to do detective work to figure out the cause. First, launch Event Viewer. Press Windows key+r, then type eventvwr.msc and press Enter. Next, in the left-hand pane, click the arrow to expand the Windows Logs category, then select System. In the right-hand pane, click Filter Current Log (see screenshot above).

In the box that appears, click where it says ‘All Event IDS’, then type 1074 before clicking OK (see screenshot right). The middle pane now lists entries matching the 1074 ID, which is the ‘event’ that tells the computer to shut down.

Click one with a date and time that matches with a recent shutdown. We can’t tell you what you’ll see but click the General and Details tabs to see the process's name: that’s the closure culprit. Launch the relevant program and disable its automated-shutdown option. If you don’t recognise it, research what to do next by tapping the name into a Google search.
