Restrict device usage at certain times

In Issue 538’s Phone & Tablet Tips, we explained how to update your iphone and ipad to the latest version of IOS (12). One of its new features is Screen Time, which tells you how much time you’re spending on apps and websites. You can also use it to set time limits for specific app categories (for example, games) if you realise that you’re spending too much time on them. It can also be handy for limiting how much time your children spend on your device.

To use the feature, open Settings, tap Screen Time, Turn On Screen Time, then tap Continue. Now use your device as you normally would for a few hours, then return to the Screen Time section. You’ll see a time (in minutes) with four sections below (see screenshot above).

Tap the time to see an hourly-usage graph and a list of which apps you’ve used. The Downtime section lets you schedule a time period when you want to restrict your device usage. During this period, you can only use certain apps that you set. To set these, tap the Always Allowed section, then tap the ‘+’ icon beside the apps you want to use during downtime.

Next, tap the App Limits section, then Add Limit. You’ll see a list of app categories (Social Networking, Games, Entertainment, and so on). Select the

relevant category, tap Add, then set a time limit using the sliders. Next, tap Use Screen Time Passcode, then type and confirm a passcode of your choice. You’ll need to type this if you want to continue using any restricted apps.
