Where’s my October Update?

-

QI’ve been a Computeractive reader since the beginning. I’ve followed all the Windows 10 articles and by now had expected my PC to have received the October Update (1809). However, as I write, in January 2019, I remain stuck on 1803.

I’ve repeatedly checked for updates but I’m informed my computer is up to date. My PC is a Palicomp purchased on your recommendation in August 2017. Please help! Mike Boyle

AWindows 10 updates are made available through what Microsoft calls a ‘controlled roll-out’, meaning that not everyone gets it at the same time. This is partly to manage demand on Microsoft’s download servers. However, it also allows the firm to delay the download to PCS that have particular components or programs that are known to cause problems. Microsoft calls these ‘roll-out blocks’.

By this stage in Windows 10’s roll-out it’s almost certainly the latter fact that’s causing your hold-up. As a result, it’s impossible for us to know precisely what might be causing the block on your PC.

In the first instance, visit the Microsoft support page at www.snipca.com/30322. Scroll down to the status table and check all entries marked as ‘Download block in place’, and compare those with your computer’s setup.

You might be able to chivvy things along by uninstalling any programs listed as troublesome (click Start followed by the Settings cog and then Apps, then click an app followed by Uninstall – see screenshot). However, if it’s irksome hardware or drivers, then you’ll just have to wait until Microsoft and the companies involved sort the problem out.
