How do I stop this message from Dell?

-

QMy Dell Inspiron One 2320 now tells me that the AC power adapter type and wattage cannot be determined, and that I should connect a Dell 180W adapter. However, the AC adapter is the original Dell 180W. It tests out as being in perfect working order, supplying the correct voltage. As well, all connections have been checked and the computer works perfectly. I’ve tried all the checks recommended on the Dell website, including installing the latest BIOS, but the message persists. Your excellent magazine has been very useful in sorting problems, so I hope you might offer suggestions to sort this one out. Peter Jenkins

AYou’ve already tried literally everything a mortal user might be expected to check – and then some. (We don’t know how many other readers would know how to check a power supply’s output voltage!)

We’re afraid everything now points to a hardware glitch, or an impending hardware failure. It’s most likely something within the power supply itself, but there’s no way for us to know. Replacement power adapters are available (for around £43, www.snipca.com/30324). However, in the first instance we’d recommend running Dell’s diagnostic tool for your PC, at www.snipca. com/30325 – click Run Diagnostics (see screenshot). If that doesn’t turn anything up, then call Dell support on 0800 028 2660, as the company’s technicians might have inside information on the cause of this message.
