Record your screen

-

If you need to show what’s going on when asking for assistance, or trying to show a relative how to accomplish a task, the simplest solution is often to send them screenshots or a short video of your screen. To capture a screenshot on IOS or ipados, press the home and power buttons simultaneously. On Android, press power and volume down.

Recording video is a little more complicated. On IOS and ipados, open Settings, tap Control Centre, followed by Customise Controls. Scroll down and tap the green ‘+’ beside Screen Recording. Press the home button to exit Settings. Now, whenever you want to record what’s happening on your device, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to reveal Control Centre, then tap the recorder button, which appears below the other icons (see screenshot below). Close Control Centre by swiping down, and perform whichever actions you want to capture. When you’ve finished, open Control Centre again and tap the recording button a second time. The video will be stored in your photo library.

Android version 10, which is rolling out now, has a built-in screen recorder but, if your device hasn’t yet received the update – and not all devices will – you can download the advert-supported AZ Screen Recorder instead ( www.snipca. com/33091). The ads don’t appear in your recording or interrupt what you’re doing on screen, so you’ll get a clean result even if you choose not to remove them by upgrading to Premium (£2.29).

Once launched, AZ Screen Recorder adds a control button to the edge of your screen. Tap it, then tap the video-camera icon that appears and, as with IOS and ipados, simply perform the sequence of tasks you want to capture. When you’ve finished, swipe down from the top of the screen to open the Android notifications panel and tap the stop button.

The results are stored within AZ Screen Recorder. To export them to your photo library, tap the three dots to the right of their entry in the video list, tap Share, then ‘Upload to Photos’.
