How do I stop these pop-up suggestions?

- Peter Williams

QWhen I’m typing in Windows 365, some word suggestions appear on top of what I am writing. Is it possible to stop this happening, or otherwise move them out of the way?

A‘Windows 365’ doesn’t actually exist, though we wouldn’t be at all surprised if Microsoft does at some point adopt that name. That would bring the operating system’s branding in line with Office 365, which does exist, and is a subscription version of Microsoft’s suite.

However, in the here and now, the version you’re almost certainly using is Windows 10. It might be that you also have a subscription to Office 365, feeding into your confusion about the naming of Windows.

Now, while the various Office 365 programs do have a feature called Autocorrect, which, in some circumstances, can provide suggestions and auto-completion facilities, from your description we do not believe that this is at the root of your annoyance.

Instead, we think you have a Windows 10 feature enabled that shows pop-up suggestions in almost any Windows app, including the Office 365 tools – even if you’re using those tools in a web browser, say. These suggestions do pop up just above the text-entry cursor, which can indeed obscure stuff you’re writing (see screenshot above). Annoyingly, there’s no way to specify where the suggestion pop-ups appear, but you can disable them – so that’s probably the best bet for you.

To do this, first click Start followed by the Settings cog, and then Devices followed by Typing. Now, in the right-hand pane, scroll down to the ‘Hardware keyboard’ section and click to flip the ‘Show text suggestions as I type’ switch to its Off position (see screenshot above).
