Why has my Windows 10 display gone yellow?

-

Q

I’m not sure if Microsoft has told my Windows 10 computer to show solidarity with the ravages of my advancing years but all of a sudden my screen has gone a bit yellow. What I mean is, everything is working as normal but the display now seems to have a distinct yellowish hue. It’s most noticeable on white areas and, as I write a lot in Libreoffice, it’s therefore staring me in the face all day. Any idea what might be going on? Barney Mills

It sounds to us like you’ve inadvertently enabled a feature Microsoft calls ‘Night light’, which reduces the amount of blue light pumped out by the screen – as this is supposedly easier on the eyes. Instead, ‘warmer’ colours are brought to the fore, which give the display a bit of a yellow or orange tint.

This is easy to set by accident, as it requires one click in the Action Centre. To open this, either click the speechbubble icon at the far right of the

Windows taskbar, or use the keyboard shortcut Windows key+a. Now just click the ‘Night light’ tile to disable the mode (see screenshot 1 ).

It is possible to control ‘Night light’ so that it only comes on at night, which you might prefer. To do this, first click Start followed by the Settings cog and then System followed by Display. Next, in the right-hand pane, click the ‘Night light settings’ link (see screenshot 2 ). Now use the options here to set how you’d like it to work. For example, you can flip the ‘Schedule night light’ switch to On (see screenshot 3 ), and then choose ‘Set hours’ to set a schedule. Use the Strength slider to set the intensity of the effect.
