5G mast burners should be locked up for years

-

You were absolutely right to call the current 5G conspiracy theories “deranged” (Issue 579, page 6). I don’t understand the mentality of people who believe that viruses can be spread by radio waves. You might as well say that switching channels on the TV by remote control gives you tuberculosis.

The problem with arguing with conspiracy theorists is that their default response is always denial. You simply can’t win. If you point out the facts, they always respond by saying that’s exactly what the experts want you to think. In their warped minds, proof that something is true merely confirms that it’s false. And conspiracy theories last for decades, even centuries – just think of the Moon landing, the JFK assassination, and flat Earthers.

But at least those theories are harmless nonsense. Flat Earthers might be astoundingly ignorant, but at least they’re not causing criminal damage like the vandals burning 5G masts. It’s for this reason that the authorities must come down hard on these people, and lock them up for longer than they would for damaging property in normal times. In the long term, these idiots are undermining both

CA SAYS We couldn’t agree more. Arguing with conspiracy theorists is like trying to cure a headache by punching yourself repeatedly in the face. We fully support the decision of social-media sites to block messages that encourage people to vandalise 5G masts. Freedom of speech doesn’t give you the right to incite violence.

For our part, we won’t publish any letters that claim there’s a link between 5G and Coronavirus. This isn’t a matter of debate, like whether broadband should be made free to the public, or whether the BBC licence fee should end (subjects that have prompted plenty of emails in the past few months). It’s simply a fact: 5G does not – indeed can not

– spread Coronavirus.
