Can I connect a DVI screen to my computers?

- Arthur Bedford

I have acquired a nice large screen, hardly used. It has what I believe is a DVI connection. It also came with a cable that had the matching DVI connector on each end. However, I do not have this socket on either my laptop or desktop computer, so there is no way to marry up the two. Would there be a method of overcoming this problem?

I would like to use this screen because it is somewhat larger than what I already have.

Assuming your laptop is relatively modern, it’s likely to have a standard HDMI port. Many recent desktop PC graphics cards have this port, too.

The HDMI port is an all-digital connection that carries both video and audio signals, so has become the accepted standard for hooking up all manner of digital audiovisual gear – be it a laptop or desktop PC, games console or any of the various digital boxes that you might well have under your TV.

DVI is a common but older connection standard that’s mainly used between computers and screens, such as the one you’ve just acquired. It carries video only rather than audio and video, but the good news is the video part of the signal is the same as that of HDMI. So, if you happen to have an HDMI-TO-HDMI cable floating around, then a simple adapter, such as the pictured Vmojo model (around £5, www.snipca. com/37395), is all you’ll need to connect your laptop (or desktop PC) to your screen.

Alternatively, you can spend just a little bit more to buy a dedicated HDMI-TODVI cable, like the £7 cord from this Amazonbasics range ( www.snipca. com/37394).
