Market to become regular event after successful trials

-

»» NEWQUAY is set to get a regular outdoor market for the first time following successful trials last year.

Throughout 2023 a number of trials were held in the town by LOVE Newquay and the Business Improvement District, which works to improve conditions for traders in the town.

Now a market will be held on the first Saturday of each month featuring local craftspeople, , creators, food and drink producers and other small businesses. The Cornwall Shop Small campaign and the town’s existing farmers’ market have both been involved, and the venture has the support of the town council.

The first market will take place on Saturday, April 6, between 10am and 4pm.

To be known as the BIG Newquay Market, similar to Truro’s offering, it will be in Bank Street and extend on to the Killacourt on the seafront.

“Visitors can expect about 50 stalls of contemporary crafts, artisan makes, local lifestyle inspiration, vintage finds and delicious food and drink alongside live music, creative community fun and market specials from local resident businesses”, said BID manager Mark Warren.

Since starting in the role he had repeatedly been asked why Newquay did not have its own market, he said: “The 2023 trial markets were a great success and proved that there was a demand for us to make this a regular feature for the town.

“Footfall data from our September 2023 market was up almost 60% year on year, and increased density in the vicinity indicated that people were spending more time in the market area.

“The open, gazebo-style layout ensures that the market will enhance the local business landscape rather than compete with it.”
