Mum died before detox could start

»»A MOTHER died before her drug detox treatment could begin, an inquest heard.

A two-day inquest into the death of Kelly Beck, aged 33, heard she had been found dead on September 12, 2022, in a room at the Queen’s Head in the centre of St Austell.

A care home employee, she had been suffering from poor mental health and with alcohol and drug addiction.

The inquest, held in Truro, heard her addiction had become apparent to her family in 2021, two years after she gave birth to her son.

Her husband Ashley told the inquest that Mrs Beck was a fantastic mother and empathetic carer who had been crying out for help to kick her habit and get her life back on track.

As her issues worsened the couple had decided it would be best if they no longer lived together and Mrs Beck first went to live with her father and was then placed in temporary housing at the Travelodge in St Austell.

By September 2022 she had moved to the Queen’s Head, a pub which also offered rooms to let.

Her family raised concerns about the care she received from the various addiction agencies and Cornwall’s health and mental health services, but the inquest found no evidence of any neglect.

In fact it heard that she had engaged well with several agencies including drug and alcohol service We Are With You.

She had been approved for detoxification treatment in August 2022 but died from multiple drug toxicity before the treatment could start.

Andrew Cox, senior coroner for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, concluded that her death was drug-related.
