survived infancy; possibly the conditions contributed to their early demise. His cave, 30ft long, was built by himself. He chiselled his name with the year ‘1735’ into the stone. Daniel had a fascination for the stars. Bodmin Moor, 300 hundred years ago, afforded him the best dark skies! He was also a keen mathematician and put this to good use as he was employed by the gentry to map their estates. You might describe Daniel as eccentric, and it was a fascinating glimpse into life in the early 18th century.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday, May 7, at 7pm in the Town Hall, when our speaker will be Jean Charman, with “Inspirational Cornwall”. If you enjoy local history, do come along. Visitors £4, members free, including refreshments and you can join in singing the Cornish anthem, Trelawny. For further details contact the president on 01208 812655.

MUSEUM

Volunteers were delighted to welcome St Mabyn Young Farmers on Friday, the club’s meeting night. We shared pictures of the club in its early days, formed under the directorship of Sir John Molesworth-st Aubyn of Pencarrow in 1937 and the first in the county, closely followed by Stratton and Probus YFCS. Wadebridge was proud to be a very early railway town from 1834 with cargoes of sand and minerals, then farm produce and passengers being able to move around for education and work. Later the trains brought holidaymakers to the town. Our visitors were encouraged to walk over the medieval bridge to absorb the natural surroundings of our lovely town. Time is of the essence when you are working the land and caring for livestock in order to feed the nation, particularly in this season’s adverse weather conditions, so thank you, Young Farmers, for including your local museum in the club programme.

If your club, society or group would like to organise a visit to the museum out of hours, you will find us at the top of Cross Street and we are open six days a week, 11am to 3pm, closing at 1pm on Saturdays. We are more than happy to discuss your requirements.

WADEBRIDGE CHORAL SOCIETY

The sciety’s Spring Concert will take place in St Endellion Church next Saturday, April 20, at 7.30pm. The work to be performed will be Dvorak’s much-loved Stabat Mater. Scored for choir, orchestra, and four soloists and completed in 1877, it was first performed in Prague in1880, and in London in the Albert Hall in 1883. Typically with Dvorak the work is full of glorious music, with echoes of tunes from his native Czechoslovakia. The work has 10 movements, rich in vocal scoring, and for this performance the soprano soloist will be Rebecca Moon, the contralto Rebecca Squire and the tenor Mark Hounsell (both of whom sang with us last year in ‘Elijah’); taking the bass part will be Jacob Dennison. There will be a full orchestra led by Phillip Montgomery-smith and the performance will be conducted by director of music Nicholas Danks. St Endellion will provide the perfect setting so don’t miss this opportunity to hear this rarely heard beautiful work. Tickets (£15 including programme) are available from the Wadebridge Bookshop, members of the choir and on the door.
