Fifty-three matches all called off as Cornwall cricket season fails to get going

- BY MICHAEL WEEKS

ALL 53 matches on the opening day of the Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League failed to take place on Saturday.

A total of 34 were rescheduled, with the statutory seven days’ notice, while 19 other games were cancelled with the teams unable to agree to a rescheduled date.

Both sides take six points. With grounds still very wet, and a lack of preparation by groundskeepers, the prospects for the forthcoming weekend are not looking too good, either.

At the beginning of the week of the 57 scheduled games, 32 had been rescheduled and seven already confirmed as cancellations.

Cornwall County Cricket Club’s competitive season begins on Sunday, April 28, with the visit of Devon for two NCCA T20 games with the fixture now switched from Werrington to St Just. Werrington have yet to be able to do any work on their cricket square.

The following Sunday Dorset are due to visit Wadebridge and the next day, Bank Holiday Monday, Cornwall travel to Salisbury to play Wiltshire.

Cornwall’s planned warm-up T20 games with the Development XI at Truro on Sunday have been cancelled due to ground conditions.

ATHLETICS: Fifty-three athletes from Hayle Runners were part of a field of 291 on Sunday to take on the10-mile multi-terrain An Res Hellys race, which starts and finishes in

Helston, and is organised by Carn Runners as part of the Cornwall GP series.

The route takes participants through the National Trust Penrose Estate, along the coast, and across Loe Bar.

A lone piper, stationed at the end of the beach, gave everyone a muchappreciated boost before the hill up to Gunwalloe.

From there, the runners headed inland, passing RNAS Culdrose before descending back into Helston for the finish.

The Hayle contingent put in a very strong performance. Emma Paull did phenomenally well to come in as 3rd woman overall.

In addition, the Women’s and Men’s teams both took second place in their races.

The men’s team was comprosied of Jacob Gardner, Dominic Turton, Liam O’neill, Steven Wherry, Simon Jeffs, and Scott Abraham.

Emma Paull, Lucy Paull, Debbie Harrison-webb, Julie Towers, Fiona Gamble and Lia Foreman made up the women’s team.
