HEY, HOW DO I WEAR… Festival style?

…with not a bloody flower crown in sight

1 HEADLINER OK, OK, we know – a perfectly papped shot of Alexa Chung at Glastonbury always seems to magically appear any time an article even slightly whiffs of summer. But with due cause – she’s the queen of dressing for British festivals. Hell, any festival, really. (Remember her PVC trousers with a knitted jumper and a wax jacket? Case in point.)

2 MIX MASTER You’ve been tagging your friends in #outfitgoals posts for weeks (‘us at Glasto!’), but when it’s time to pack, you panic and reach for your old cut-offs. Not Queen Alexa – she bravely dons a shimmery high-neck minidress for the mud-pits (tempered, of course, with a muddy wellie). A disco-diva dress with Farmer-John boots somehow just works – see tip four.

3 RUNNER-UP The way to work a sparkly mini is to pair it with a sporty sweatshirt and trainers. The key thing to remember is to contrast with pieces that aren’t dressy at all. Into Alexa’s metallics, but just not in minidress form? Look for tank tops or slip dresses in traditionally ‘after-dark’ fabrics (velvet, satin, etc) and layer with a grungy logo tee in a contrasting colour.

4 ACCESSORISE ALL AREAS If you’re going to wear something spangly, casual accessories are also your friend: think lace-up combat boots and classic ’90s sunnies. See a theme here? Pieces with a vintage, lived-in feel ensure your daytime metallics don’t look out of place by the tents.

5 SHOW TIME The secret to pulling off said disco-diva dress is all about the shape and size. Yes, it’s short, but it’s covered up on top, and the short-length A-line frees your legs for dancing. If this were a maxi dress in the same material, or if it were skin-tight, or if the top had a slashed-V cleavage, it would instantly lose the nonchalance factor. Get mud on it; who cares? It’s all part of the look.
