Frozen’s Josh Gad on being frisked, sick bags and playing the world’s most-loved snowman

-

What’s the last thing you got angry about?

At the airport, they made me take off my shoes, my belt and my hat and somehow I still got pulled aside for a pat-down and another screening once I got through the gate. At that point it just felt like humiliation. The only place I could be hiding any weapons was in my ass so I was like, “Is that what we’re attempting

to find out here?”

Name your favourite animated film that you’re not in?

Aladdin.

It’s the one I come back to over and over again, and I always find something new and inspired in Robin Williams’ performance. It’s the gold standard for me. I would definitely want to play the Genie if

I was cast in Aladdin but also I couldn’t imagine attempting to follow in Robin’s footsteps.

What’s the worst present you’ve ever received?

I got trashed one night and [on my way] into work the next day I threw up all over myself in the car. So for my birthday that year, my colleagues got me 150 personalised vomit bags. It was emasculating to say the least. It was just the sheer amount of them that got me. I guess it’s useful though.

How about the weirdest reason you’ve been in hospital?

One time, I thought

I had sliced my “lower extremities” open because I saw blood pouring down. I’m the biggest hypochondriac, so I went to the hospital, freaking out, thinking, “Oh my god, I’m losing all the blood that I need in that region,” only to find out it was an ingrown hair that had burst. The staff just laughed and sent me on my way. I think that’s the first time I used one of those personalised vomit bags.

Talk us through the most awkward run-in you’ve had with another celeb…

During my first week as an aspiring actor I was in a coffee shop in LA when I noticed Robert Downey Jr in the queue. I was obsessed with him, so I introduced myself and we got on really well. I was like, “Oh my god, he and I get each other!” Then we got to the end of the queue and he turned to me and said, “Can you give me five bucks for a coffee? I don’t have any cash on me.” I was a young, starting actor in Hollywood and I had to pay for Robert Downey Jr’s coffee. I’ve since told his wife [film producer Susan Downey] but I’ve never told him.

Have you ever stolen anything from a set?

I stole a pair of shoes from The Book Of

Mormon. They were my original shoes that I wore on my first night on Broadway. I always try to keep something from the set for every character I play as a memento, with or without the permission of the producers.

What’s the grossest thing you do when you’re alone?

Dipping crisps in ketchup. It’s always considered gross.

What’s your favourite Olaf line?

“Some people are worth melting for.” But people always make me say “I like warm hugs…” Josh stars in Frozen 2, in cinemas 22nd Nov
