How to actually stick to your New Year’s goals

Drag queen and total icon Courtney Act talks resolutions and the shows and movies she’ll be streaming on NOW TV in 2020

While I do find the New Year hyperbole a bit clichéd, it’s nice to have a reset button for life. I tend to seek instant gratification with my New Year’s resolutions, but I’ve learned that some of them require a little patience.

Take last year’s fitness goal, for example. As a woman of, cough, a certain age, I realised that I had to be much more intentional with exercise and with how much protein I was eating (I’m vegan but wanted some mad gains, brah), so I started hitting the gym and downloaded a fitness app, which quickly became more addictive than Hinge, Grindr and Christian Mingle combined.

A year on and I’ve established healthy habits that deliver lasting results, and which I plan on sticking to in 2020. I may sound like a self-help book, but whatever your resolutions are, from wellness goals to saving money, taking on new habits gradually will make things way easier.

A less gruelling goal for 2020? Catching up on all of the amazing movies and TV series I’ve missed over the past few years. I feel like I’m the only person who hasn’t watched The Handmaid’s Tale yet, so I’m definitely putting that at the top of my watch list – series one and two are currently streaming on NOW TV.

To get you all lubed up for LGBT History Month 2020, stream the movie Love, Simon. IT’S SO CUTE. This gorgeous coming-out story melts my heart and means I’ll never look at Ferris wheels in the same way again…

I also can’t wait to stream Jordan Peele’s acclaimed thriller movie Us on NOW TV this January. Lupita Nyong’o and her through-the-looking-glass family look deliciously creepy.

You’ll need a palate cleanser after Us, so try the TV series Catfish. It’s mind-boggling how someone can have a two-year online relationship with a stranger without ever Face-Timing. Also, I definitely have a crush on the host, Nev.

So, will this New Year bring a new me? Not quite – just an improved version.
