ican’t remember the last time I procrastinated as much about anything as I have this page. Because honestly, what can I, someone who has never kept a News Year’s resolution, say about them? Well, let my failure be your success…

Use them wisely New Year’s resolutions should be an excuse to force yourself to do the things you want to do. Something fun, exciting and maybe a little scary. They should not, under any circumstances, be used as a way to berate yourself on a regular basis for the next 12 months.

Make them manageable Why do we hate ourselves? Stop making New Year’s resolutions that only a super-human with access to a 24-hour personal trainer, five assistants and a private jet would achieve.

Make them specific I cannot tell you how often my New Year’s resolutions have been “get fit”, “travel more” or “be more organised”. I mean, can you vague that up a bit? Come up with more than a nebulous dream; have a specific goal and make a plan for how you’ll get there.

What’s holding you back? Try not to think about what will help you, think about what will stop you. Then work out how you can remove those obstacles. Or at least shrink them.

Celebrate the mini wins If you’ve made yourself an action plan, be sure to pat yourself on the back for every little step you take. I recommend a Freddo as a motivational aid, but each to their own.
