You’re more likely to come across MDF panelling these days than real wood, but it does have the advantage of stability and can easily be cut to fit and painted. Some DIY panels can be glued straight to a flat wall, but the uneven walls of older homes need a framework of wood battens. Wainscot (tall) and dado (chair-back height) panelling are typical sizes, with a decorative rail at the top. Aim for symmetry around a fireplace or feature window.
