Enjoy a relaxing yoga retreat at The Malabar, a luxurious country B&B in Cumbria

Given the rolling fields, meandering rivers and quaint stone buildings, you’d be forgiven for thinking of The Malabar as a quintessentially British B&B, yet inside, there’s a distinctly global feel. Owners, Graham and Fiona Lappin bought the Grade Ii-listed eight-acre farm on the outskirts of Sedbergh, Cumbria, in 2014 after relocating back from Mumbai, and set to work refurbishing the barn.

We love it because… It has such a homely feel. Forget alarm clocks – mornings here begin with a gentle knock on the door (you decide when) and a tray of freshly brewed tea left outside your room.

Fusion design… Each of the six rooms (including the three suites) has been styled using rich colours and eclectic colonial-indian furniture. Upmarket touches include Italian designer bathrooms with brightly painted freestanding baths and walk-in monsoon showers.

Relax and Reboot… This month, The Malabar is hosting an exclusive yoga retreat led by Radhika Vachani, founder of Yogacara Healing Arts in Mumbai. From 20-24 September, guests will be able to enjoy a varied programme of yoga, meditation and pranayama alongside tasty meals designed to nourish mind, body and spirit. Extra activities include a barefoot walking experience on the Lakeland fells and a therapeutic massage in the comfort of your own room.

explore the area… The tranquil surroundings of the River Lune is right on the doorstep, not to mention uninterrupted views of the glorious Howgill Fells. Keen cyclists can also make the most of some of Britain’s best mountain and road biking. homemade treats… Enjoy afternoon tea in the stunning high-ceilinged living room with its woodburning fire – The Malabar House Blend tea is a delight, served with dainty sandwiches and freshly baked treats. Another must is the Cumbrian breakfast menu, or culinary delights, such as fresh juices and smoothies, eggs Benedict and gingerbread pancakes. how much? Prices start at £160 for a double room, including full breakfast and complimentary afternoon tea on arrival.
