Enjoy a relaxing stay beside the Thames at The Chequers

With a history that dates back centuries, the Chequers Pub & Dining Room has long been a local drinking house in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, and still has its own traditional alehouse.

WE LOVE IT BECAUSE… It’s located in the heart of the bustling market town, yet just a few minutes’ walk from the river valley meadows of the River Thames, making it the perfect place to leave the confines of the car and explore on foot. The town is also famous as the place where Mary Shelley completed her literary masterpiece Frankenstein.

BOUTIQUE BOUDOIRS There are nine contemporary bedrooms, all designed by an in-house team using a sophisticated palette of colourful fabrics, bold geometric tiling and chic Harlequin and Cole & Son wallpapers. The individually furnished rooms also feature Feather & Black beds and high-pressure rain showers in the en-suite bathrooms.

TIME FOR A TIPPLE In the groundfloor bar you’ll find a wide selection of wines, plus a specially selected gin menu, while in the adjoining building, known as the Churchill Tap, there is an impressive choice of beers. With original beams made of ships’ timbers, this cosy space sells ales from Brakspear and other local breweries, in addition to international craft beers.

FEELING PECKISH The two dining rooms offer seasonally focused menus to delight and excite. Head chef Steven Styles is passionate about using locally sourced produce and the very best quality cuts of 100-day aged, grain-fed beef, with steaks cut to size to order and prepared on the feature butcher’s block in the main dining room. EXPLORE THE AREA Enjoy a day rambling along the banks of the River Thames to the award-winning Higginson Park or travel the river by canoe from nearby Henley.

Take a stroll around Marlow’s town centre with its many independent boutiques, vintage and antiques shops. Slightly further afield, you can visit Windsor Castle, Savill Gardens and Waddesdon Manor. HOW MUCH? A double room costs from £90 per night for a midweek stay, including breakfast.
