A WEEKEND AWAY

In historic Cambridge

-

Forgotten by much of Cambridge for many years, The University Arms – the city’s oldest hotel – had been neglected and was victim of a strange flirtation with a modernist wing in the Sixties. Luckily, new owner-developers set about restoring it to its impressive 19th-century glory last year. Now, with the ugly extension banished, the smart original façade restored and a top designer taking charge of the glamorous interiors, the hotel has regained its reputation as the best address in town. An idyllic spot for country folk seeking a city break, it’s also a popular destination among brunching locals and families

stopping over for a night while visiting the city’s various universities, colleges and schools.

CITY SETTING The hotel is set on Parker’s Piece, a small stretch of parkland in the heart of Cambridge, lined on all sides by attractive period terraces. It’s a lovely setting for city accommodation, as certain suites overlook the green and provide a soothing hit of bucolic bliss. All of Cambridge’s most interesting attractions are an easy walk from the hotel, and the River Cam is just a few streets over – perfect for post-breakfast morning strolls. STUDIOUS OPULENCE Interiors man of the moment Martin Brudnizki was charged with the task of revamping the property, and his work here is a study in collegiate charm. Original features have been preserved and restored, including mahogany fireplaces, stained glass and decorative moulding. Some rooms are tastefully themed around former and current students and residents of the city, such as Stephen Hawking and Charles Darwin.

MODERN TAVERN Brudnizki’s intelligent styling continues into the hotel’s restaurant, Parker’s Tavern, which takes its design ethos from the most sophisticated of dining halls. Overseen by chef Tristan Welch, the restaurant serves a menu of seasonal British comfort food and culinary classics. Find dishes such as roasted pilchards, fish cakes, honey and thyme Norfolk duck, and brown buttered sole. Be sure to try the rice pudding souffle – a sophisticated take on nostalgic school lunch puddings.
