The orig­i­nal pipe—the piece that hooked me on mud­lark­ing. It showed not only that there are fas­ci­nat­ing his­tor­i­cal ob­jects to be found, even by the ca­sual am­a­teur, but that th­ese ob­jects could be beau­ti­ful, per­fectly de­signed and gor­geously de­tailed. I’ve since picked up many clay pipes, but none that I prize as much as this. me to iden­tify this as the Ja­panese Crane Pat­tern, by Christo­pher Dresser for Min­ton, made in about 1880. and more—my money’s on the teddy.
