Har­vey’s Sauce was a mix­ture of vine­gar, an­chovies, cayenne pep­per, soy sauce, walnut pickle, gar­lic, shal­lots and cochineal, highly pop­u­lar in the 19th cen­tury, al­though now long gone. Capt Charles Combers (born 1752) was a keen mem­ber of the Quorn and stopped at The Ge­orge at Bed­ford, on his way to Le­ices­ter­shire. He orders his usual steak from Har­vey,
