These ac­count for 39% of our let­ter­boxes and were first in­tro­duced in Lon­don in 1896, in re­sponse to com­plaints from mid­dle-class let­ter writ­ers, who wanted to post letters late at night with­out a long walk. By the time of the Sec­ond World War, lamp boxes had pro­lif­er­ated in the coun­try­side and, where there’s no con­ve­nient pole, they stand on their own pedestal.
