These account for 39% of our letterboxe­s and were first introduced in London in 1896, in response to complaints from middle-class letter writers, who wanted to post letters late at night without a long walk. By the time of the Second World War, lamp boxes had proliferat­ed in the countrysid­e and, where there’s no convenient pole, they stand on their own pedestal.
