Go it alone
Are you sick of the rat race? Would you rather be surrounded by puffins than people? The new National Trust vacancy, for a ranger on the Farne Islands, a mile off the Northumberland coast, is a wildlife enthusiast’s dream. There may not be any running water and the Arctic terns may be partial to dive-bombing, but the commute’s only a minute and you‘re on the doorstep of one of the country’s largest seal colonies. As one of two full-time rangers, the successful candidate will live on the islands for nine months a year. They will be joined by 11 seasonal rangers over the summer, living on the remote islands 24 hours a day for five days a week. Applications close on February 7.
