Letter of the week Save our songbirds!
WE need more high-profile articles about the drastic decline of our songbirds (‘The silencing of the birds’, January 18). The loss of habitat in the UK is a matter of as much concern locally as the loss of the rainforest is of concern globally. Here in Teesdale, most of our hedgerows are brutally slashed every autumn, denuding them of all their berries and greenery and depriving the bird population of sustenance and shelter for the winter months. If this is official farming policy encouraged by grant aid, then I suggest it should be subject to urgent review by government. Belinda Goyder, Co Durham
