I have my grandfather’s 1927 wind-up gramophone and his collection of Al Jolson and Al Bowlly records as well as my father’s Elvis Presley records from the 1950s. It feels like the most direct link possible to both of them as I hear exactly what they did and their presence is powerfully conjured up.
