Sow peas

Peas are an easy enough crop to grow, provided certain routines are observed. Prepare a seedbed in a plot of well-cultivated ground, with plenty of organic matter worked in during the winter. Set a tight line and open a shallow trench with the spade blade held almost flat, spooning the soil carefully to one side. In the resulting spade-width trench, sow the pea seeds a couple of inches apart the length and breadth of the trench. Replace the covering soil with the utmost care. Cover the whole trench with chicken wire well secured at the edges to deter birds and mice.
