What to see this week
These two watercolour and pastel panoramas by Toby Ward of Lincoln are the preparatory sketches for views commissioned to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the Fair of Lincoln (COUNTRY
LIFE, January 11, 2017). The completed oils based on these sketches are now on display at ‘Battles and Dynasties’, a newly opened exhibition at The Collection in Lincoln that runs until September 3 (01522 782040; www. thecollectionmuseum.com).
The artist worked on the sketches between May and September 2016, moving between the cathedral in the morning and the castle in the evening to catch the sun. Because of the wind in the two exposed vantage points, he was forced to create collages using numerous small sheets of paper. He then used the sketches to produce the final paintings.
Mr Ward previously undertook a residency at Lincoln Cathedral and is currently documenting the changes to Westminster Abbey.
