Horticultural aide memoire Pot up herbs

- SCD

The good gardener is always thinking ahead. If you want fresh herbs during the winter, you will need to lift some young plants now, pot them up and bring them indoors. This will work for perennials such as marjoram and chives. Early in the morning or at dusk, carefully lift a tuft of healthy young growth and work it into a pot with some fresh compost. Make sure no roots are turned back upwards. Trim the leaves back as they will wilt and new ones will form in their place. Keep the plant shaded for a week, then bring it indoors.
