Create this spectacular autumn flower arrangement

- Extract from ‘The Flower Book’ by Rachel Siegfried, photographs by Clare West, published by Dorling Kindersley (£25)

You will need

5 eucalyptus stems (Eucalyptus gunnii) 4 berried viburnum stems (Viburnum opulus) 2 hawthorn branches (Crataegus monogyna) 2 red-leaved rose branches (Rosa glauca) 8 chrysanthemums (Chrysanthemum ‘Fuego

Bronze’) 4 great burnet stems (Sanguisorba officinalis) 3 strawflowers (Xerochrysum bracteatum) 6 zinnias (Zinnia ‘Jazzy Mix’) Round, copper flower pot Chicken wire Pot tape Floral snips Secateurs

Arrange 1

Place a chicken-wire ball inside the pot. Secure it with a cross of pot tape and fill the container three-quarters full of water.

2 Cut the eucalyptus so that it is about twice the width of the pot and position into the arrangement at various angles—some should be upright, others horizontal or draped over the side.

3 Cut the viburnum stems short and use them to fill in the centre and at the front. Cut the hawthorn and red-leaved rose to three times the width of the pot. Place them so they stretch out beyond the eucalyptus.

4 Cut the chrysanthemums’ stems quite short, so that only the flowers are visible when are they positioned in among the foliage. Angle some towards the back and side for a natural look.

5 Leave the stems of the great burnet, strawflowers and zinnias long, and nestle them in amongst the chrysanthemums so that they look like they are hovering above the flowers.

Care

Top up the water every 2–3 days and the arrangement will last for 7–10 days.
