QUIRKY COUNTRYSIDE
Devil’s Stone
While most people look forward to dazzling firework displays, 5 November marks a very different tradition in Shebbear, north Devon. Measuring about six foot by four and weighing a tonne, the Devil’s Stone must be turned on this day each year to ward off bad luck. The task is carried out by bellringers, while the vicar regales the crowd with the many legends about its history.
