Devil’s Stone

While most people look forward to dazzling firework displays, 5 November marks a very different tradition in Shebbear, north Devon. Measuring about six foot by four and weighing a tonne, the Devil’s Stone must be turned on this day each year to ward off bad luck. The task is carried out by bellringer­s, while the vicar regales the crowd with the many legends about its history.
