LIGHT & DARK
A richer mix of furnishings calls for a more dynamic play of light and shade. This style suits a room that is less well-lit. To achieve a dramatic effect, dot lamps around to create areas where light is focused and bright, perhaps for reading, but then disappears into shadow to give warmth and contrast. As a rule, stronger colours and tones don’t suit rooms that have a wash of bright or high-key lighting, such as from a single pendant placed centrally. Try to shine light up and against the walls, with a number of table or floor lamps situated close to the side of the room, and use sconces or wall lights to accentuate rich paint colours.
