STOVES
Cast-iron models add to the rustic style of country properties and can be a striking feature in a room – one placed in the centre will have a strong impact. Effective and economical, stoves require four times less fuel than an open fire to produce the same amount of heat. They can also be fuelled by wood or gas, with the latter being easier to clean and quick to ignite. But, if you are installing one, it could cost more than you think; it’s at least £1,000 to have a fireplace replastered, hearth and stove installed, the chimney swept and lined and a cowl fitted to ensure it draws well. You must also use a qualified installer. If budget is a constraint, a portable gas heater (some look like more expensive stoves) could be an option in a smaller space.
