Take a leaf out of nature’s book and decorate with rustic furniture, earthy colours, woodland prints and foraged finds

NATURE’S PALETTE

Painted and upholstered furniture in earthy russet and rich green suits this scheme, while prints of woodland creatures bring it all to life. Owlswick wallpaper in teal, £75/10m roll, Sanderson at Style Library (stylelibrary.com).

Original pieces – such as a patchworkfabric stag’s head or a wildlife print – add personality

WILD WONDER

A dining room filled with vintage wooden furniture and decorated with faux planked wallpaper achieves a textured, rustic effect against an otherwise neutral palette. Peeling Planks wallpaper in white, from £47, Clarke & Clarke (clarke-clarke.com) Stag’s head, from a selection, Carola Van Dyke (carolavandyke.com).

BRANCHING OUT

Reinforce a woodland theme with natural arrangements. A white dinner candle planted in a pot dressed with elegant pine sprigs and cones, and finished with a satin ribbon, makes for a sophisticated centrepiece.

WOODLAND RETREAT

Combine green, blue, cream and earthy shades with forest motifs. Add layered textiles and low-level lighting to create a cocoon-like feel. The Brook wallpaper in dark blue, £90/m, Morris & Co at Style Library (stylelibrary.com). Raw metal and lacquered Edward double bedstead, from a selection, Wrought Iron & Brass Bed Company (wroughtironand brassbed.co.uk). Owl cushion, from a selection, Peaceable Kingdom Cushions (peaceable kingdomcushions.co.uk). Leaf lampshade, from a selection, Cressida Bell (cressidabell.co.uk).

TREE TALES

Wallpaper and fabrics decorated with figurative designs of trees, foliage and bark have a romantic appeal and create the feel of a woodland hideaway. Wallpapers (L-R): Juniper Pine, £69/roll; Owlswick, £75/roll; Silvi Clouds, £85/roll, Farthing Wood, £59/roll: all Sanderson at Style Library (stylelibrary.com).

Fire starter

Pine cones make natural firelighters due to their high resin content. Create a bed of melted wax (from old dinner candles) by pouring into cake cases and leave to set with a cone and sprig of aromatic pine.

Inside out

Bring finds from outside indoors. An old urn covered with moss or lichen is set against a tree mural or length of wallpaper hung in place as a piece of art. Similar tree-design paper panel from Anne Mckenzie (annemckenzie.com).

Light and dark

Simple sprigs of evergreen displayed in a glass vase make dramatic silhouettes when positioned in front of a window.

Age and beauty

Classic dark wood furniture is the perfect backdrop for textiles decorated with motifs of trees, fields and leaves. Lampshade, from a selection, Lush Designs (lushlampshades.co.uk).

INTO THE WOODS

A collection of reclaimed wooden boards with plenty of variation in tone and texture, some with rubbed-back original paintwork, make for a highly original background in this rustic bathroom.

Reclaimed wooden boards create a striking panelled wall
