Walk 2

-

Where to start: Walk along the Camelford Way to Advent Church (Point 4) or park at Harpur’s Downs. Take the lane from Tregoodwell. Head towards Roughtor. Turn right at the crossroads signed ‘Advent Church’. Keep left at two junctions, then follow the narrow lane across a stream to a T junction. Turn left and park 300m ahead.

Along the way: ...are fine views of Bodmin Moor, especially its two highest tors, Brown Willy and Rough Tor. At 420m and 400m respectively, they are also the highest hills in Cornwall. Part of the route is along a medieval holloway, a track worn into the earth by people and livestock from Carwether, an abandoned hamlet through which it passes. Carwether remains as mounds and lines in the turf, but Advent’s 13th-century granite church is now restored. Typically Cornish apart from its eight-pinaccled tower, it has several interesting features, including its aisle, arcade, wagon roof and ceiling bosses.

In a nutshell: This gentle walk combines great views of Bodmin Moor’s highest tors with visits to an abandoned medieval village and a fine church.
