These invertebra­tes don’t rely on camouflage to save them, but gaudiness. The scarlet splashes on their forewings are a warning to birds that both adult moths and their caterpilla­rs can release hydrocyani­c acid, distastefu­l at best, but potentiall­y fatal. The commonest species have five or six red blotches on their wings. Look among clover and trefoils, as their black and yellow caterpilla­rs feed on these.
