5) BURNET MOTHS
These invertebrates don’t rely on camouflage to save them, but gaudiness. The scarlet splashes on their forewings are a warning to birds that both adult moths and their caterpillars can release hydrocyanic acid, distasteful at best, but potentially fatal. The commonest species have five or six red blotches on their wings. Look among clover and trefoils, as their black and yellow caterpillars feed on these.
