The Inside Track...

Local and co-creator of the iWalk Cornwall app, John Alden shares his love for local history.

WHY I LOVE IT...

The gateway to the highest part of Bodmin Moor, Rough Tor is pronounced ‘row’ (like cow) – the Cornish dialect word for ’rough’. You can walk in the footsteps of Stone Age people who almost certainly climbed the same summits to admire the view.

LOOK OUT FOR...

More prehistory than a druid could shake a staff at. Neolithic and BronzeAge remains include the burial chambers, the foundations of roundhouses and prehistoric field systems. Standing stones and tor-top enclosures continue to baffle historians.

MUST VISIT...

Brown Willy – the highest point in Cornwall – from which there are spectacular views on a clear day. The name should be Bronn Wennili – Cornish for ‘hill of swallows’ – but became mangled when the Cornish language stopped being spoken.
